Discrimination-free Zone

WHAT IS THE CAMPAIGN?

The Discrimination-free Zone campaign is an information campaign to combat any form of discrimination, bullying or harassment. It enables organisations and work communities to declare their commitment to the principle of non-discrimination. Declaring a discrimination-free zone means opposition to discrimination, addressing the problem if one exists, and recognising equality between human beings. Such a declaration is also a signal to employees, job-seekers and customers that the organisation welcomes everyone irrespective of gender, age, ethnic background, religion or belief, opinion, state of health, disability or sexual orientation.

IMPLEMENTATION OF THE CAMPAIGN
The campaign invites organisations and work communities to declare themselves a discrimination-free zone. Anyone can lay down the challenge. The organisation declaring itself a discrimination-free zone completes an online declaration form and receives in exchange a Discrimination-free Zone sign, which must be displayed somewhere on its premises for all to see (e.g. in a canteen, factory, school/youth club hall, on the walls at a fitness centre, or on an internet webpage). The idea of the campaign is to make commitment to equality visible, because instructions and strategies to combat discrimination all too often get buried under piles of paper on bookshelves and desks.

THE CAMPAIGN’S BACKGROUND ORGANISATIONS
The campaign has been planned and implemented jointly by Helsingin Sanomat, the Finnish Multicultural Sports Federation (Fimu), the European Commission’s ‘For Diversity. Against Discrimination.’ campaign, the Finnish Disability Forum, the Finnish League for Human Rights, Sexual Equality (SETA) and the Equality is Priority project coordinated by the Ministry of the Interior.
